Ilderton Lions Honour New Veterans

REMEMBRANCE BANNERS 2021

The members of the Ilderton and District Lions Club believe it is important that we remember the veterans of all our country’s wars and peacekeeping missions, both those that paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who returned home. It is because of them that we continue to live in a free, democratic and prosperous country.

With the service and sacrifices of local veterans in mind, the Ilderton Lions initiated a project in 2019 to erect Remembrance Banners on the main street of Ilderton. The idea was to have sponsors for each of the banners with the Lions club ensuring the banners were displayed each year during the Remembrance period leading up to Remembrance Day, November 11th.

This year we are adding four additional banners:

Bob Craig Banner

Robert J. (Bob) Craig – WWII – Royal Canadian Air Force

Honoured by: Carolyn Ideson, Vera Henderson, and Jeff Craig

Bob Craig joined the RCAF in 1939 and after basic training at the Technical Training School in St Thomas, Ontario, he was stationed at the Botwood Newfoundland RCAF base. He was involved in the operations of this site as it underwent expansion to accommodate increased numbers of troops. The mission of the RCAF there was to patrol and defend the western portion of the Atlantic from enemy invasion and protecting the supply convoys between North America and Europe. Bob was also involved in the training of the troops in Botwood and RCAF Gander bases.


Ted Goddard Banner

W.H.E. (Ted) Goddard – WWII – Canadian Army – The RCR

Honoured By: The Goddard Family

Ted Goddard served with the Royal Canadian Regiment in WWII where the regiment was initially deployed to the Italian campaign. They pushed from the south to the north of Italy over a 20-month period, July 1943 to May 1945. Canadians faced difficult battles against some of the German army’s best troops. They fought in the dust and heat of summer, the snow and cold of winter, and the rain and mud of the spring and fall. Following the D-Day Invasion of Normandy, France in June 1945, the regiment was deployed to Northwest Europe where they fought in France, Holland, and Belgium.


Stanley Sweetmam Banner

Stanley M. Sweetman – WWI – Canadian Army -Canadian Engineers

Honoured By: The Grandchildren

Stanley M. Sweetman served in the first World War with the Canadian Army Engineers. Following the war, he served as Minister at the Ilderton United Church, 1933-1941.
