IKE CHRISTENSEN MEMORIAL BONSPIEL 2019

The Ilderton and District Lions hosted their annual curling bonspiel January 25, 2019, with Lions clubs participating from Glencoe, Ilderton, London East, Lucan, Poplar Hill, Strathroy, St Thomas, Thamesford, and Thorndale, with guest competitors, the London Visually Impaired Curlers, led by Ilderton’s Tim Prohaska.

The Ilderton Lions took the trophy from last year’s winners, Thamesford Lions, second place went to, the Glencoe District Lions, closely followed by the Strathroy Lions team.

The London Visually Impaired Curlers participation in the bonspiel is notable, in the fact, Lions are specially dedicated to serving the blind and visually impaired, a commitment made after Helen Keller challenged our members to become her “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” in 1925.

The bonspiel has been held continually, for approximately fifty years. In 2011, the bonspiel was named in memory of Ilderton resident, long time Lion, and avid curler Eigil “Ike” Christensen.
